Clinical trials demonstrated that our novel composition of astaxanthin and omega-3 functionalized phospholipids significantly improve cognitive and affective disorders caused by developmental, hormonal and/or age related abnormalities.

Neptune has carried out a number of clinical trials for various therapeutic indications using Neptune Krill Oil (NKO®), a patented composition containing the astaxanthin and novel omega-3 phospholipids. These trials offer a great degree of comfort and reassurance of the effectiveness of NeuroBio’s bioactives as pilots and proof of concept.

Two multicenter, three-month, prospective, randomized double blind clinical studies and one open-label, monocentric, 6-month clinical study have been carried out to date. The objectives of these studies were to evaluate the effect of NKO® on:

1. emotional distress associated with premenstrual syndrome including mood swings, depression and irritability
2. quality of life (SF-36 self assessment score) including emotional, social and mental behavioral abnormalities
3. adult ADHD as measured by Barkley’s Executive Function score of behaviour inhibition, daily functional capacity and social behaviour.

The results of the study demonstrate that Neptune Krill Oil can significantly reduce dysmenorrhea and the emotional symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and is shown to be significantly more effective for the complete management of premenstrual symptoms compared to omega-3 fish oil.

The results of the study clearly demonstrate that Neptune Krill Oil can significantly improve quality of life and specifically social function, emotional role, general health, mental & physical well-being.

The results of the study showed a statistically significant improvement in all Barkley’s Executive Function scores. In particular, patients improved their ability to concentrate, their working capacity, their social skills, their ability to manage money, their driving capacity and road-safety skills, their ability to focus and their planning skills.
