What Are
Krill?

Krill are small shrimp-like crustaceans at the base of a complex food chain. 85 species span the globe’s oceans with a total biomass of approximately 600 million tons, making them the largest animal biomass in the world.

They provide an important food source for whales, seals, penguins, albatrosses, and many other birds. Today, krill are also recognized as an emerging and potent source of marine omega-3 fatty acids that offer multiple health benefits.

Neptune Technologies and Bioressources Inc. only harvests Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) that breed in pure, uncontaminated deep sea waters of the Antarctic Ocean. Neptune follows the strict international guidelines and ethical business practices that ensure the health of the krill bloom. 

The annual high reproduction rate of Antarctic krill is at least several hundred million tons, which constantly renews the standing stock and grants sufficient krill to feed all marine mammals, fish, birds, and humans, as well as for dietary supplements for human health benefits.

An Abundant Biomass

Antarctic krill is an essential organism in the Antarctic ecosystem. A species of zooplankton invertebrates that floats in huge swarms and feeds on microscopic algae, Antarctic krill are an essential component of the Antarctic food chain and are a food source for a variety of Antarctic marine life including whales, seals and penguins.

Ongoing research suggests that with proper fishing practices, the human consumption of krill will not affect stock levels. Estimates for the biomass of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) are between 400 and 420 million tons, and only 0.04% of the biomass is harvested for human consumption. 

Commission for Conservation

The Scientific Committee of CCAMLR (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) has set precautionary catch limits on the krill fishery and keeps it under constant review through a detailed ecosystem approach. Established by international convention in 1982, CCAMLR is an international commission with 25 members, and a further 10 countries have acceded to the convention. 

Our Certifications

Friend of the Sea is a non-profit organization, whose mission is to conserve marine habitat. Neptune is proud to have the designation of Friend of the Sea (FOS) certification, meaning that Neptune’s krill oils adhere to strict guidelines to make sustainability a reality. FOS certification also demands high standards in terms of energy efficiency, social accountability, no GMO usage, and respect for critical habitats. FOS suggests that “…fisheries adopt selective fishing methods, reduce ecosystem impact and manage within Maximum Sustainable Yield.” 

NSF International Neptune’s environmental practices and business conduct have passed an audit by NSF International, an independent, non-profit organization that provides product certification for public health and the environment, for the exemplary role they play in adhering to environmental best practices for catch quotas outlined in The Antarctic Treaty and monitored by CCAMLR.

Greater Bioavailability of Omega-3 Phospholipids in NKO®

In a clinical study, NKO® was proven to be 2.5 times more bioavailable (better bodily absorption) than fish oil and other sources of omega-3 by comparing the increase of the Omega-3 Index from a baseline.*

Neptune Krill Oil™ is a patented marine oil that contains omega-3 (EPA and DHA), phospholipids, and antioxidants (astaxanthin, vitamins A and E).

Known as the gatekeepers of human cells, phospholipids make up every cell membrane in the human body and help protect and keep our cells healthy.
